Short answer: most people need 6–8 laser hair removal sessions, spaced 4–8 weeks apart, to achieve a long-lasting reduction in hair.
Why more than one session?
Hair grows in three phases. Laser only works on follicles in the active growth (anagen) phase, which at any given moment is only around 20–30% of the hair in an area. Repeated sessions catch each new batch of hairs as they enter that phase.
How long should you wait between sessions?
- Face: every 4–5 weeks, because facial hair cycles faster.
- Underarms and bikini: every 5–6 weeks.
- Legs, back and chest: every 6–8 weeks.
What affects the number of sessions?
Hormones (for example PCOS), hair colour and thickness, skin type, the area treated and the device used all influence your plan. Fine blonde, grey or white hair responds poorly to laser.
How to prepare
- Shave the area 12–24 hours before treatment.
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least two weeks before and after.
- Tell your clinician about any medicines you take, as some make skin photosensitive.
Your clinician will confirm a personalised plan at your consultation.
